U17 SHIRES FINAL 2011

WARWICKSHIRE emerged winners of the U17 2011 Shires Leaue Final. After finishing a close third at U17 ICT two weeks earlier this was a chance to improve on that result.

Winner's - Warwickshire U17 Shires League Final 2011
After disposing of Sussex 17-3 in the first round, Warwickshire again drew Cheshire in the semi-final, unlike ICT however this time Warwickshire turned the result around winning the match by 13-7.

This left only Lanacshire in the the way of the title. Warwickshire had beaten them 7-3 two weeks before so confidence was fairly high. But after going 0-4 down it was starting to look like Warwickshire were going to miss out yet again. A brief team talk by coach Pete Chapman was needed and the fight back began. Eight of the the next ten rubbers went Warwickshire's way, with the score now standing at 8-6, Lancashire then pulled back taking a 9-8 advantage into the final three games, Rhys Walker and Sam Parsons won thier doubles, 9-9, meaning that it was all down to the last two girls doubles matches.

It looked likely that that these two matches would end one a piece, with Warwickshire No.2 girls pair having lost their first rubber against Lancashire's No.2 pair, but Joshway Bong and Til'Shilow Shaw-Cole put in a incredible effort to beat Lancashires No.1 pair Sophie Sankey and Terri-Lee Holmes. This left Becci Crawsaw and Eve O'Sullivan to finish off the match 11-9
to Warwickshire.

ICT 2011 - Final Day

SO CLOSE FOR THE FINAL FOUR!

After four days of competition any one of the four teams from Lancashire, Warwickshire, Buckinghamshire and Cheshire were still in with a chance of winning.

In the end Bucks proved too stong for Lancs, thier 7-3 victory ment they took the title without loosing a single match.

Warwickshire and Cheshire were left to battle it out for second and third, unbelivablely after the final shuttle was hit the scores were tied 5 rubbers all, level on games and level on points!
Cheshire were awarded second place due to better results of the first ranked players. congraulations to them and bad luck Warwicks.

U17 Nationals 2011

Good things come in 3's for the  U17 English Nationals champion

Rhys Walker - Warwickshire
Warkwickshire’s Rhys Walker proved to be a triple threat, taking the title in 3 of the 5 disciplines on offer whilst Holly Smith of Durham did a ‘double in the doubles’ at the recent 2010-11 U17 English National Age Group Championships hosted by the Hertfordshire Sports Village.
Walker, justified his billing as top seed, by seeing off the challenge of Tom Wolfenden [Lancs] 21-16, 25-23 to claim the Boys Singles title for a 4th consecutive year – a feat he shares with England Number 1 and World Number 15 Rajiv Ouseph, who also holds the same accolade but at senior level.
Holly Smith - Durham
And that was just the start for Walker who paired up with regular partner Aaron Cheng [Surrey] to claim the Boys Doubles title - with a 22-20, 21-18 victory over Darren Adamson and Daniel Hatt - and then joined Holly Smith on court to take the Mixed Doubles title.
It was the second of two doubles crowns for Smith who, alongside Sophie Sankey, took the plaudits and trophy in the Girls Doubles event with a comprehensive 21-12, 21-13 win over Avon pairing of Lynniette Aung and Jessica Hopton.
Aung and Hopton, buoyed by individual successes at the U15 English National Age Group Championships, were the surprise package on show.
Chloe Birch - Yorkshire
Holly Smith didn’t have everything her own way, finding her charge to match Walker’s triple haul halted by Chloe Birch [Yorks]
in the Girls Singles final. Birch, who continues to go from strength to strength, bounced back from losing the first game to win a tight final 14-21, 21-17, 21-18.
It was 2nd year in a row that Smith has ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline at the final hurdle to finish as runner up.
Elsewhere and credits also go out to Tom Wolfenden who won through to two Finals and one Semi Final without success whilst Darren Adamson, finalist in the Boys Doubles, also reached the Semi Final stage in the Mixed Doubles and Boys Singles.

U19 Nationals 2011

U19 Nationals 'double joy' for Milne and Nottingham

Yorkshire’s Sarah Milne and Matthew Nottingham of Cheshire both successfully retained the U19 Nationals titles they won in 2010 - and then returned to court to collect further titles at the 2011 English National U19 Championships at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes.

Milne successfully saw off Hertfordshire’s Helena Lewczynska in the Semi Final to set up a repeat of last year’s Womens Singles final against Panuga Riou [Hampshire] and the Leeds star was, once again, simply too strong for her opponent, winning 21-11, 21-14 to defend her title.
Riou had earlier needed all her experience to defeat the unseeded surprise package of Chloe Birch, who had knocked out 4th seed (and her doubles partner) Georgina Bland to reach the last 4.
However Milne was not finished there. The Leeds star then paired up with Jessica Fletcher to add the Women’s Doubles title, after a 21-14, 21-14 victory over promising pairing of Sophie Brown and Holly Smith.
The defeated finalists had produced the one notable shock of the event - downing top seeds Helena Lewczynska and Hayley Rogers in the Semi Finals.
Yet Milne was not the only player to do ‘the double’ over the weekend - Matthew Nottingham tasted success in both the Mens and Mixed Doubles disciplines.
Nottingham joined Chris Coles on court as top seeds in the Mens Doubles and did not disappoint, taking the title in a tough final against Harley Towler and Alex Fowler.
Neither partnership had dropped a game going into the final and spectators were treated to some long rallies as the pairs battled it out for the title with Nottingham and Coles eventually emerging victorious at 21-19, 21-16.
Nottingham’s ‘double in the doubles’ was completed when he teamed up with partner Helena Lewczynska in the Mixed Doubles event.
The partnership had fallen at the Semi Final stage at last year’s competition but went one better this time around, defeating 3rd seeds, Harley Towler and Emily Westwood 21-14, 17-21, 21-17 to edge a tense final.
In the Men’s Singles event, revenge was order of the day when Toby Penty survived a tough last 4 clash with Chris Coles to set up a Finals Day date with 2010 winner Josh Green.
Green had beaten Penty in the semi final stage on his way to victory at last year Championships but it was the man from Surrey who took the honours this time around.
Top seed Penty edged a close opening game 22-20 then took control in the second game, wrapping up victory with a 21-14 win.
Speaking of the Championships, Martin Andrew, BADMINTON England’s Junior Performance Head Coach said “The U19 Nationals are always a pressured environment for the top players so it was good to see many of them respond to the difficult situations and win titles. Other players also showed that they can perform at a good level and challenge the more established players.”

Andrew added “The current U19 age group are very competitive and are pushed hard by some of the younger players which is very encouraging to see for the future.”
